Choroonu or Rice Initiation or Annaprashan is a popular custom among Hindus that symbolizes the baby’s transition from consuming liquid foods to solids.
As per Malayali style, the baby wears “Kasavu mundu” (sandal color dress with golden zari borders). Place the baby in the lap of his/her uncle (paternal or maternal).
The baby is then blessed with Sandal paste, Tulsi leaves, and Flowers by the Priest. Baby can be offered with any of the below items. Generally, it is prepared by the mother or grandmother and served to the baby in a silver vessel. The Baby’s uncle should feed the baby first followed by him, parents and relations can also feed the baby.
Sweet Rice – A bit of rice made with Brown rice, salt, and jaggery.
Kheer – It is made of traditional ingredients such as oats, jaggery, ghee, and rice.
Banana is also used to feed the baby.
When to perform Choroonu?
This ceremony is generally performed on the 6th or 7th month on a date that is compatible with the Janma Nakshatra of the child on a good and an auspicious thithi and yoga.
Benefits of Choroonu:
Performing this Choroonu pooja helps the child to have good digestion and which will, in turn, help the child to grow healthy and strong.
Anything unhealthy or any substance that will cause illness to the child will get cleansed once this pooja is performed.
