Sundarkand, which literally means “Beautiful Book” is one part of the Hindu epic Ramayan. The original Sundarkand is in Sanskrit and was authored by Valmiki, who was the first to scripturally document the Ramayana. Sundarkand is the only phase in the Ramayana in which the hero is not Rama, but rather Hanuman. It describes the event of Hanuman battling all odds with Vibhishan in Lanka, to bring back Sita by defeating the ferocious Raavan. He wanted to break the false pride of Raavan and serve his master Lord Rama. Hanuman’s selflessness, strength, and devotion to Rama are highlighted in the text. Valimiki has praised this brave act of devotion by Hanuman, and recitals of his writings are believed to please Hanuman, who then bestows upon his devotees immense happiness and desired results.
