दक्षिण भारत में उगादी हिन्दू नववर्ष के आगमन की ख़ुशी में मनाया जाता है। 2019 के तेलुगू संवत्सर का नाम परिधावी 2076 है।

उगादी मुहूर्त

1.  हिन्दू पंचांग के अनुसार युगादी चैत्र मास के शुक्लपक्ष की प्रतिपदा को मनाया जाता है।
2.  प्रतिपदा तिथि सूर्योदय के समय होनी चाहिए।
3.  यदि प्रतिपदा 2 दिनों के सूर्योदयों पर पड़ रही हो तो पहले दिन उगादि का त्यौहार मनाना चाहिए।
4.  यदि प्रतिपदा एक भी सूर्योदय पर नहीं पड़ रही हो तो जिस दिन वह तिथि शुरू हुई है, उस दिन त्यौहार मनाया जाएगा।
5.  युगादि का त्यौहार अधिक मास में नहीं मनाया जाता है। यह केवल शुद्ध चैत्र मास में मनाया जाता है।

नूतन संवत्सर के स्वामी (वर्षेष)

नव संवत्सर के पहले दिन के स्वामी को ही पूरे साल के स्वामी का दर्जा दिया गया है। हिन्दू नव वर्ष 2076 का पहला दिन शनिवार है और इस दिन के स्वामी शनि हैं। अतः इस साल के स्वामी शनि होंगे।

उगादी का त्यौहार

उगादी की शुरूआत एक सप्ताह पहले से ही हो जाती है। लोग अपने-अपने घरों की साजो-सज्जा करते हैं और नए कपड़ों के साथ त्यौहार से संबंधित सभी ज़रूरी वस्तुओं की ख़रीदारी करते हैं। उगादी के दिन लोग सुबह-सुबह जगकर सूर्योदय से पहले स्नान करते हैं और आम के पत्तों से बने तोरण से घर के दरवाज़ों को सजाते हैं। आइए अब यह जानते हैं कि लोग आख़िर आम के पत्तों से ही सजावट क्यों करते हैं:

देवी पार्वती और भगवान शंकर के पुत्र कार्तिकेय और गणेश को आम बेहद ही पसंद थे। कार्तिकेय भगवान ने लोगों से कहा कि वे अपने घर के द्वार पर आम के पत्ते लगाएँ, जिससे उनके परिवार में सुख-समृद्धि का आगमन होगा और अच्छी फ़सल होगी। तभी से यह परंपरा आरंभ हुई।

इस दिन लोग अपने घर के सामने या बरामदे में गाय के गोबर से मिला जल छिड़ककर रंग-बिरंगी रंगोली बनाते हैं। लोग अपने-अपने इष्टदेवों की पूजा अपनी श्रद्धानुसार करते हैं और मंगलकामना करते हैं।

दक्षिण भारत में रहने वाले लोग उगादी का त्यौहार बड़े ही धूम-धाम से मनाते हैं। लोग अपने सगे-संबंधियों के साथ एक जगह इकट्ठा होते हैं और तरह-तरह के व्यंजनों का आनंद लेते हैं।

उगादी पर बनने वाले मुख्य व्यंजन

कुछ लोग आज के दिन 6 स्वादों से युक्त व्यंजन खाते हैं। लोगों की मान्यता है कि जीवन अलग-अलग भावनाओं और संवेदनाओं का मिश्रण है, और हर एक भावना 1 स्वाद की तरह होती है। इस दिन का सबसे ख़ास और लोकप्रिय व्यंजन उगादी पच्छाड़ी है, जिसमें 6 प्रकार का स्वाद होता है। हालाँकि अलग-अलग क्षेत्रों के हिसाब से इसे बनाने की सामग्री बदल जाती है। आइए जानते हैं कुछ क्षेत्रों में प्रमुख रूप से इस्तेमाल होने वाली सामग्रियों के बारे में:

नीम के फूल और कलियाँ कड़वा उदासी
गुड़ मीठा ख़ुशी
मिर्च तीखा क्रोध
नमक नमकीन डर
इमली का रस खट्टा घृणा
कच्चा आम तेज़ स्वाद आश्चर्य

कर्नाटक के लोग इसे बेवू बेल्ला के रूप में खाते हैं। उगादी पचादी इस दिन प्रसाद के रूप में खाई जाती है। युगादी के दिन सबसे पहले लोग उगादी पचादी को ही खाते हैं। कई जगहों पर लोग गुड़ के साथ नीम के पत्ते भी खाते हैं।

इस दिन कई और व्यंजन भी बनाए जाते हैं जिनमें से एक व्यंजन का नाम ओबट्टू/होलिगे/पूरन पोली है।

बाद में दिन में लोग किसी एक स्थान पर (ज़्यादातर मंदिर में) इकट्ठा होते हैं और बड़े-बुज़ुर्गों से नए साल का पंचाग और राशिफल सुनते हैं। कई इलाक़ों में कवि-सम्मेलनों का आयोजन भी होता है। कुछ लोग इस दौरान अष्टावधानम्, षठावधानम्, और सहस्रावधानम् का प्रदर्शन करते हैं। यह अपने आप में एक नायाब कला है। इसमें साहित्य के 8, 100 या 1000 विशेषज्ञ छंदों का संकेत देते हैं और उस 1 व्यक्ति को उन सभी छंदों का स्मरण सही क्रम में करके एक कविता के रूप में गाकर सुनाना होता है। यह सम्मलेन के ख़त्म होते वक़्त किया जाता है।

विभिन्न क्षेत्रों में उगादी का त्यौहार

कर्नाटक, केरल, महाराष्ट्र और कोंकणी समुदाय के लोग इसे युगादी के नाम से पुकारते हैं, वहीं तमिलनाडु के लोग इसे उगादी और युगादी दोनों नामों से संबोधित करते हैं। महाराष्ट्र के अधिकतर लोग इस त्यौहार को गुड़ी पड़वा के नाम से मनाते हैं।

अलग-अलग क्षेत्रों में उगादी को निम्नलिखित नामों से जाना जाता है:

• गोवा और केरल में संवत्सर पड़वा या संवत्सर पड़वो
• कर्नाटक के कोंकणी लोग युगादी कहते हैं
• तेलंगाना और आंध्रप्रदेश में उगादी
• महाराष्ट्र में गुड़ी-पड़वा
• राजस्थान में थापना
• कश्मीर में नवरेह
• मणिपुर में साजिबु नोंगमा पांबा या मेइतेई चेइराओबा
• उत्तर भारत में चैत्र नवरात्रि आज से शुरू होती है

Ugadi, is the Hindu New Year celebrated by the people of the Deccan region of India. The 2019 Telugu Samvatsara is Paridhāvi 2076.

Ugadi Panchangam

1.  Ugadi is celebrated on the Chaitra Shukla Pratipada (first day of the bright fortnight of the Hindu month Chaitra), as per the Panchangam.
2.  The Pratipada Tithi must prevail during the sunrise of the day.
3.  In case, the sunrises of 2 days are witnessing Pratipada, the first day will be considered for the celebration.
4.  If Pratipada Tithi is not prevailing on any sunrise, the day will be considered when the Tithi will be beginning.
5.  Ugadi is not celebrated in Adhik Maas (extra month added after every 32 months, 16 days, and 8 Ghatis). In Sanskrit, the day of Ugadi is called Chaitra Shuddha Padyami.

King of Nav Samvatsara (Varshesh)

The Lord of the first day of the New Year is considered as the Lord of the entire year. In 2019, the first day is Saturday. Lord Saturn is the Lord of Saturday. Hence, Lord of this New Year is Saturn.

Ugadi Celebrations

Preparations for Ugathi begin a week ahead. People clean and renovate their houses. Shopping of the new clothes, as well as required items for the festival, is done. People bathe before the sunrise and decorate the entrance door & windows with the fresh mango leaves. The tying of mango leaves has a story behind:

Kartikeya and Ganesha, the sons of Shiva-Parvati, were very fond of mangoes. Kartikey insisted people tie mango leaves at the door of their houses to welcome prosperity and good harvest.

People also make colourful Rangolis in front of their houses after sprinkling the area with the cow dung mixed water. The New Year is begun with the blessings of gods by worshipping them. People worship the gods as per their convenience.

People from the various regions of Deccan plateau in India celebrate Ugaadi with great enthusiasm. Relatives gather on a grand feast. Festivities begin from an early morning oil bath.

Ugadi Delicacies

Some people have the food items of 6 different tastes on this day. With 6 tastes, they believe that life is the blend of different emotions and each emotion is like a taste. There is a famous delicacy for this particular day called Ugadi Pachadi. It consists of all the 6 tastes. Although, the recipe differs a bit from region to region, yet most common ingredients are given below:

In Karnataka, people have this delicacy as Bevu Bella. Ugadi Pachadi is eaten as a holy food on this day. It is the first thing that people eat in the celebration of this festival. At some places, people just take neem leaves with jaggery.

Many other delicacies are prepared for the day. One of them is Obbattu/Holige/Puran Poli. It is a Roti stuffed with the paste of grams and sugar/jaggery; topped with clarified butter (Ghee) or milk. Some people use coconut milk instead of dairy milk.

Later in the day, people gather and listen to the horoscope as well as details of the Panchangam of the New Year by an elder or responsible person.

At some places, Kavi Sammelan (poetry event) is also organized. Some experts demonstrate Ashtavadhaanam, Shathavadhanam, and Sahasravadhanam as well during this event. It is a very rare skill. In this, a person must remember the difficult verses presented by 8, 100, and 1000 experts of the literature; and the order of the verses must be correct. The person has to recite all the verses in order in a poetic way. It is performed at the end of the event.

Ugadi In Various Regions

People from Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Konkani community spell this festival as Yugadi. Telugu people know it both ways as Ugadi or Yugadi, depending on their region and community. In Maharashtra, the majority of people know this day as Gudi Padwa.

Ugadi festival is known by several names in different regions of India. Some of them are given below:

• Samvatsar Padvo among Konkanis in Goa and Kerala
• Konkanis in Karnataka know it as Yugadi
• Ugadi in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana
• Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra
• Thapna in Rajasthan
• Navreh in Kashmir
• Sajibu Nongma Panba or Meetei Cheiraoba in Manipur
• Chaitra Navratri begins from this day for North Indians.
